Administration and Politics

The highest decision-making authority in the Municipality of Kimitoön is held by a Council comprising 27 members. The Municipal Manager is the head of administration.

Municipal Council and Executive Board

Kimitoön’s governance is centered on the Municipal Council and the Municipal Executive Board. The Municipal Council is the highest decision‑making authority and is elected every four years in municipal elections. It determines the municipality’s overall strategy, appoints other municipal bodies, and decides on major financial matters, including the municipal budget and the tax rate. Council meetings are livestreamed on the municipality’s website, ensuring public transparency.

The Municipal Executive Board consists of nine members. It is responsible for managing and developing the municipality in accordance with the goals, plans, and decisions set by the Municipal Council. The Board prepares matters for Council consideration, oversees municipal administration, and ensures that Council decisions are implemented.

Alongside these central bodies, various committees, sections, and boards handle specialized areas such as education, environment, youth affairs, auditing, and water services.
